If you need to once again trash preferences take a copy of your saved "prisitine" preference folder (make sure that InDesign is not running) and simply replace the corrupted one with the copy of the good one. Then keep that copy someplace on the computer for future use.

To avoid having to lose your program customizations every time that you have to trash preferences make a copy of your preference file right after you have finished setting up the program the way you like (make sure you quit the program after you've finished customizing to "lock it all in").
